Haley Gallery to Present *uter(us), an Exhibition by Sarah Matthews
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Aug. 18, 2026 – The Haley Gallery at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum presents*uter(us), an art exhibition showcasing the works of printmaker Sarah Matthews, who is also serving as the 2026 Hatch Show Print Visiting Artist. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public beginning the evening of Sept. 18 through Nov. 13, will include a series of letterpress prints and artists' books created at Hatch Show Print.
The exhibition examines women's health through the language of medicine, exploring the words and phrases physicians and nurses use when speaking to patients. It also addresses critical issues including period poverty, the maternal mortality crisis, the pink tax and reproductive healthcare. By transforming medical language into visual narratives, the exhibition invites viewers to confront these disparities, amplifying conversations about bodily autonomy, informed consent and equitable healthcare for all women.
The Hatch Show Print Visiting Artist series invites regionally, nationally or internationally recognized visual artists to explore Hatch Show Print’s collection of type and imagery and collaborate with the shop’s designer-printers to make new work.

Opening reception
On Friday, Sept. 18, the Haley Gallery will host a reception with Matthews to celebrate the exhibition opening. The reception, which will take place between 5 and 8 p.m., is free and open to the public. More information on the event and the exhibition can be found on the gallery’s website.
Hatch Show Print workshop
On Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Hatch Show Print will host an upcycled flag book workshop with Matthews. A flag book is a type of handmade book with an accordion-folded spine in which the leaves or pages containing fragments of the artist’s imagery and narrative are attached to the spine so that they stick out like flags as the book is opened. Participants will transform authentic Hatch Show Print make-readies — the misprints and multi-layered prints made during the process of preparing a poster for the final print run —– into a one-of-a-kind flag book. The workshop will explore the creative intersection of print, collage and bookbinding as attendees layer bold colors, typography and patterns into a dynamic artist book.
About the Artist
Matthews is a highly skilled printmaker and book artist with a background in art and business. She holds a master’s degree in art and book art from the Corcoran College of Art and Design at George Washington University, as well as a master’s degree with a marketing concentration and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Bowie State University. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are part of prestigious collections at institutions such as George Washington University's Gelman Library, the National Museum of African American History and Culture Library, Samford University, University of Puget Sound and Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Matthews is also a dedicated educator, teaching Artist Books at the Maryland Institute College of Art and bookbinding and printmaking classes at various art centers and platforms. Matthews' work reflects her commitment to exploring the complex issues of race, equality and gender, while shedding light on social injustice. Through her layered prints and artist books, she documents the struggles of breaking through societal barriers. Through her art, she aims to challenge stereotypes and empower her audience to recognize the beauty, intelligence and importance of all individuals, regardless of race and gender.
